CAMINO KRK – day 7: Baška – Kornić
From the island’s highest peaks to the Church of St James

The last, seventh section, follows a 21-kilometre-long route from Baška via Jurandvor, Batomalj and Punat to Kornić, the final destination. The mighty karst landscape of the south-western part of the island will reveal stunning views of the Baška Valley and Punat Cove.
Hiking along the Vela Rika watercourse and stone sculptures dedicated to the Glagolitic heritage, you will reach Jurandvor, one of the most famous places on the island. A stone slab of the altar partition known as the Baška Tablet, discovered in 1851 in the abbey complex of St Lucy, dates from 1100 and is the oldest known document written in the Croatian language and Glagolitic script. The Baška Tablet is one of the historical pieces of utmost importance for Croatia. The trail continues to the hamlet of Batomalj, where you will climb 237 steps to reach the largest diocesan Marian shrine. The next climb towards the Lipica spring will bring you to a restored ‘mrgar’, where you can take a break to study how drystone walls were built on this side of the island. It is a multicellular sheepfold with a flower-shaped floor plan, used for separating sheep of different owners.
Soon you will get to the western ridge of the Baška Valley, with peaks of over 500 m. A hike along Vaclav’s Ridge Trail will take you to the peaks of Žminja, Brestovica, Veli vrh, and Obzova, the highest one (569 m), offering impressive views of all sides of the island. Upon reaching Veli vrh, the trail will take you downhill to Punat Cove. Following the Stations of the Cross with a view of the islet of Košljun, you will reach Punat. There, located right in the middle of the picturesque Punat Cove, you will find a true spiritual oasis – a Franciscan monastery. The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a museum with a rich holding of ethnographic, archaeological, and religious artefacts receive daily visits from numerous pilgrims. While visiting Punat, make sure to check the Toš Gallery, the Olive Growing Interpretation Centre, and the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity.
On your last section before reaching Krk, you will come across an archaeological site in Kanajt and a Romanesque church of St Donatus. The Camino Krk pilgrimage route ends in Kornić, a village close to the town of Krk, with the Parish Church of St James as the final pilgrimage point.
